Glossary · Cost per Qualified Lead

What is CPQL (cost per qualified lead)?

CPQL (cost per qualified lead) is how much a developer pays for one lead who confirmed their budget, timeline, area and payment method in a conversation with the sales team. You get it by dividing the ad budget by the number of qualified leads. CPQL reflects both traffic quality and how fast sales reaches the lead for first contact.

An example with a developer's numbers

A project spends MX$300,000 and gets 1,500 leads (CPL MX$200). First contact happened with 450, and 135 were qualified. CPQL = 300,000 ÷ 135 ≈ MX$2,222.

If first contact rises to 60% (an AI agent messages each lead right after they submit the form), you get about 270 qualified leads, and CPQL falls to roughly MX$1,111. Nobody touched the ads. That's why marketing and sales own CPQL together.

Why campaigns should optimize for CPQL

If the ad platform only gets a signal about the form submission, it looks for people who leave their contact details easily. If the CRM sends a "lead qualified" event back to the ad account, the platform learns to find people with a budget. That requires connecting the CRM to the ad accounts, and the team has to record qualification in the CRM the same day.

In our experience, the share of qualified leads on our projects grew from 5% to 25% when campaigns switched from CPL to CPQL.

Common CPQL calculation mistakes

  • MQLs, meaning form answers, end up in the denominator. CPQL looks low, and the sales team disagrees with it.
  • October's budget gets divided by October's qualified leads, even though some of them came from September leads. A cohort count is more reliable: leads created in October, and how many of them qualified.
  • CPQL gets compared across projects with different price points. A qualified buyer for a MX$8M home usually costs more than one for a MX$2M home, and that's normal.
